Year 6 London visit

‘On the 22nd of May my class and I took an unforgettable trip to London. Despite having to get to school at 7.30 in the morning, we all clambered on to the bus with high hopes of the adventure ahead of us.  Three hours passed and we had already seen many sights including many low planes as we neared Heathrow airport.

Finally we had arrived in the busy streets of London. My heart, which was pounding really fast, leapt about in my body as we all walked through this amazing city. Our first surprising landmark was the truly magnificent London Eye.

The gigantic wheel soared above us as happy people climbed inside the capsules to take a journey.  After a little walk we came to ‘Big Ben’! Seeing it on TV is nothing like experiencing it in real life.  I could hear a lot of people chattering, and the constant smell of food made me hungry.

Now, for many weeks, Mr Wright had been keeping secret locked away from us, and after a lot of waiting and stress he pulled it out of the bag…we’d arrived at Downing Street, the home of our loyal Prime Minister. Mr Wright wandered over to the armed guard, who was located behind the big black gates. Butterflies fluttered in my tummy as we realised we would be going in to the street itself. Without any thought, we all raced in.  I knew that this would be a day that I would never forget. Although this was a highly secure residence, I felt like I was as free as a bird.  We all had our pictures taken on the doorstep, and it was amazing.

Next it was time for lunch, and we were very hungry. It was a lovely spot to eat in, because we were on the steps of Trafalgar Square.  From this point I could see, the fountain, the National Gallery and the four lions around the edge.

As you may know we have based a lot of our learning on the famous painting ‘Bathers at Asnieres’. This work of art is hung in the National Gallery, so our next stop was there. It was very modern inside, and I really like the architecture on the outside. A tour guide called Ben took us around a few pictures which we had to study carefully.  Finally we came to the painting we had all been waiting for: Bathers at Asnieres…It was truly incredible to see.

After this we went to Covent Garden, and saw two performing acts. They really got my heart beating as the acts were dangerous and exciting.

After our busy day, it was time to hit the road.  We were all very tired and ready for the trip home. This was definitely a day I will never forget’.
